To the Sobremesa Guest
You are a creative, culturally curious mind who knows language is not just a tool, but a force. You’ve been exploring the idea of learning Spanish, but you feel called to experience through connection, consciousness, and care. Not just looking at it as a course to master, but as a language to inhabit.
Sobremesa was designed to meet this desire. Where Spanish feels lived, relational, and real — not academic or performative.
Through a small, founder-led immersion rooted in culture, conversation, and shared experience, you’ll practice Spanish in a way that feels human, meaningful, and alive, and leave with language that truly stays with you.
Some of the most meaningful things begin with a SÍ.

The highlights
1.
Six days of living Spanish, not studying it
Language is present from morning to night in conversation, shared meals, creative spaces, and everyday encounters. Spanish becomes part of how you move through the week.
.
2.
Founder-led learning, guided with intention
The experience is designed and held by Lydia, bringing together pedagogy, rhythm, and care. Nothing is outsourced. Nothing is generic.
3.
Daily personalized Spanish learning
Three hours each weekday of private, one-on-one Spanish, shaped around your interests, needs, and real life not a fixed syllabus.
4.
Collective conversation as practice
Daily group conversations invite you to listen, respond, and speak in a shared space — where Spanish feels alive, human, and collaborative.
5.
Creative encounters rooted in language
Workshops and visits are designed as spaces for expression and dialogue, not observation where language unfolds through making, noticing, and exchanging.
6.
Barcelona, experienced from the inside
The city is not a backdrop. It’s a living classroom entered through relationships, familiarity, and trust.
7.
A small group, by design
Fewer than 10 guests. Enough diversity to enrich the conversation, enough intimacy to feel held.
8.
An experience that continues beyond the week
The learning doesn’t end when you leave. You carry with you new confidence, rhythm, and a living relationship with Spanish.
You already know that language matters.
Not just as a skill, but as a way of relating — to people, to culture, to the world we’re shaping together. You feel the limits of not going further: how much gets lost, how many bridges remain unbuilt, how often we stay on the surface of places and conversations we long to enter more deeply.
You want to gather around language differently. To experience Spanish as a shared responsibility. To sit at the table with others who believe that speaking more than one language is not about performance or fluency, but about listening better, living with more awareness, and choosing a more connected way of being in the world.
The program
A week designed with rhythm, not rigidity.
Each day follows a gentle structure that allows learning to deepen without feeling rushed or over-orchestrated.
Arrival & Departure
- Day 1: Arrival, welcome, and settling into the rhythm of the group
- Day 7: Closing moments and departure, carrying the week with you
Morning · One-on-one Spanish (3 hours)
Together with Lydia and your assigned teacher, you co-create the content:
- language for your work and professional life
- vocabulary drawn from your interests and creative world
- conversations you want to feel confident having
- questions you’ve carried — and haven’t yet found space to explore
This is focused, relational learning paced to you, responsive, and grounded in real use.
Midday · Group conversation (1 hour)
After individual sessions, the group gathers for guided conversation.
This is a shared practice space:
- playful, thoughtful, and low-pressure
- centered on themes that matter to everyone in the room
- where listening is as important as speaking
Here, Spanish becomes collective; something you build together, not something you perform.
Afternoons & evenings · Living the language
Workshops, studio visits, shared meals, and cultural encounters extend learning into lived experience. Spanish moves with you — supported, contextual, and alive.

How we gather
Around the table
At Sobremesa, gathering is the foundation.
We come together around tables because something essential happens there. Conversation slows. Listening deepens. Hierarchies soften. Language becomes shared rather than owned. Around a table, we remember that learning is relational — and that transformation happens together.
This retreat is shaped around intentional moments of gathering: shared meals, guided conversations, cultural encounters, and time held in common. There is no pressure to perform, impress, or keep up. Each person arrives with their own rhythm, voice, and level of Spanish. What matters is participation, care, and a willingness to stay in the conversation.
We gather to practice language as a form of attention.
We gather to build bridges, not just sentences.
How we hold the space
- Intimate group
- Shared meals
- Unhurried words
- Guided conversations
What this creates
- Ease in speaking
- Trust in listening
- Language in context
- Connection with presence
Sobremesa gathers with intention, warmth, and an open seat at the table.
The Learning Experience
Learning at Sobremesa doesn’t begin with a syllabus. It begins with a person.
For over twenty years, I’ve been teaching Spanish through a relational, conversation-led approach — working with people who didn’t just want to learn a language, but wanted to live inside it. What you’ll experience during the retreat is the natural evolution of that work.
Here, Spanish is not delivered. It’s co-authored between you, me, and the teacher carefully chosen to walk alongside you.
A Founder-Led Educational Approach
Before you arrive, we take the time to understand:
- your relationship with Spanish
- your interests, and creative world
- where you feel blocked and where you feel curious
- how you want Spanish to show up in your life
From there, we co-create the learning content — language for your work, your conversations, your creative life, and your questions — designed collaboratively with Lydia and the teacher chosen to support you throughout the week.
Personalized 1:1 Learning
From Monday to Friday, you’ll spend three hours each day in private, one-on-one Spanish learning. These sessions create the foundation for your week.
You’ll be paired with one of our trusted partner teachers chosen specifically as a personal and pedagogical match — and your learning will be:
- paced to you
- shaped around your interests
- responsive to your real-life needs
It’s about building a relevant, confident, and grounded relationship with Spanish.
Group Conversation & Shared Practice
After your daily 1:1 sessions, the group comes together for one hour of guided conversation.
This is a more playful, collective space — where Spanish is practiced through:
- shared dialogue
- themes that matter to everyone in the group
- listening, responding, and being in conversation together
Here, learning becomes relational. You explore ideas, perspectives, and language alongside others — not to perform, but to participate.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
What you explore in your 1:1 sessions and group conversations doesn’t stay in a notebook.
Spanish is practiced:
- around shared tables
- in workshops and studios
- during cultural encounters
- through conversation, listening, and presence
Your learning expands organically into the week — supported, contextual, and alive — so language becomes something you use, not something you prepare for.
What stays with you
A transformed relationship with Spanish
You don’t just “learn” Spanish, you live it in community. Through shared meals, dialogue, and everyday encounters, language becomes relational, embodied, and meaningful. When the retreat is over, you’ll carry Spanish with you as a lived memory: you’ll order with ease, ask better questions, follow the rhythm of real conversation, and feel yourself arrive in a city not as a visitor, but as someone who can belong there.
Language as a bridge, not a barrier
You experience how multilingualism opens worlds: deepening understanding, widening empathy, and allowing you to meet others with more care, nuance, and attention. So the next time you find yourself in a conversation that matters — across cultures, perspectives, or differences — you’ll know how to stay present, ask with intention, and use language to create connection rather than distance.
Belonging through conversation
You become part of a small, intentional community that gathers around beauty, curiosity, and dialogue — a reminder that learning, like transformation, happens together. The group stays connected through a shared chat platform and occasional online gatherings, creating a living thread of conversation that continues well beyond the week in Barcelona.
Confidence rooted in presence, not performance
Speaking stops being about getting it right and starts being about showing up. You learn to trust conversation as a shared act, not a test. In practice, this means moving through conversations with ease — letting a missed conjugation become an opening rather than a setback, and experiencing each exchange as something you build together, not something you have to prove.
A way to carry this into your life
You leave with clarity on how to keep language alive through ritual, connection, and continued gathering, so the transformation doesn’t end when the retreat does. During the week, you’ll take time to reflect on your intentions and next steps, so you leave feeling supported and oriented toward whatever Spanish experience awaits you next — at work, in travel, or in daily life.

Here’s what learning with Sobremesa has felt like for our guests

Xanthe Appleyard
Content strategist
“I was immediately drawn to the branding — but what I didn’t expect was how much Lydia herself embodies the visual aesthetic of the brand, through the people she knows throughout the city, the businesses she supports, the things she does for enjoyment. I immediately connected with her on a personal level through shared interests.“

Anusha Rao
Founder & CEO of rooh
“From the beginning, Lydia treated me like family, not just a student. She genuinely cares about my life, my growth, and what’s happening outside of class, and that makes learning feel deeply personal. Spanish isn’t confined to lessons; it’s part of our real conversations, our jokes, our check-ins. That sense of connection is something I’ve never experienced anywhere else.“

Denys Fedorov
Film Director
“Learning a new language with a teacher who has a strong cultural background and rich life experience makes the whole process much more meaningful.“

Stephanie Viray
Chef
“I didn’t expect to look inward so much while learning Spanish…Who I am, where I’m from, what I do for work and for fun, my daily life, my family and friends… learning how to talk about these things in Spanish has made me reflect more on that information and how I’m presenting it, because what you say is just as important as how you say it.”
A note from Lydia
Cultural Concierge & Founder
After more than two decades teaching Spanish, designing immersive learning experiences, and working closely with artists, creatives, and cultural spaces across Barcelona, one truth became clear: language transforms most deeply when it’s lived together — in conversation, in shared moments, and in spaces held with care.
This retreat is the culmination of everything Sobremesa has been building, and of a lifelong passion for gathering people around language as a way of connecting, creating, and belonging.
Barcelona is not just the city where I’ll host you. It’s my daily playground.
It’s where I walk, meet friends for long lunches, move between studios and exhibitions, sit at bars where conversations linger, and return again and again to the sea for perspective. It’s where my personal life, creative world, and professional practice intertwine — organically, and with ease.
My role in this experience is that of a cultural concierge. I don’t simply teach or guide; I curate, hold, and protect the rhythm of the week. I open doors to places and people I trust. I design moments where language can unfold naturally, without pressure where each participant feels seen and accompanied.
We gather as a intimate group of less than 10 by design. So there is space to listen and room to speak. So the experience can stay human, letting time unfold naturally without over-orchestration or forced interaction.
This is an invitation to step into Sobremesa as it’s meant to be lived. Around a table. In conversation. With attention. With presence.
If this resonates, I would love to share the week with you.
With care,
Lydia

AT THE TABLE WITH LYDIA
- I’m a total Spanish beginner. Will Sobremesa.Immersions work for me?
This retreat is not designed for complete beginners.
If you’re earlier in your learning journey, Sobremesa offers other ways to begin including flexible one-on-one learning. Lydia will always guide you toward the experience that best supports you.
- Can you tell me more about the one-on-one lessons included in the immersions?
Each weekday morning includes three hours of private, one-on-one Spanish learning.
Your sessions are shaped around your interests, questions, and real-life needs — not a fixed syllabus. Some days focus on conversation, others on structure, vocabulary, or clarity. The pace adapts to you.
This is focused, relational learning designed to build confidence and fluency that feels usable and alive.
- What about the group conversation sessions?
Our group conversation sessions are designed to fast-track your fluency through real-life practice. Guided and supported by our teachers, these dynamic lessons give you the chance to speak Spanish in meaningful, real-world contexts—especially as you reflect on the experiences you’re sharing with fellow students during your time in Barcelona.
Rather than traditional classroom drills, you’ll engage in lively conversations with your peers, discussing the activities you’ve done together and building the confidence to express yourself naturally and spontaneously. The focus is on collaboration, connection, and developing the skills you need to truly communicate.
- How many hours do we spend in class?
From Monday to Friday, you’ll spend around 5 hours a day in class at the beautiful Montoya workspace. Each morning begins with a 3-hour one-on-one lesson with your personal teacher, followed by a relaxing coffee break and a 1 hour group conversation session with your fellow students.
- Where will the classes take place?
We have partnered with Montoya, a beautifully designed workspace and event space in the heart of Poblenou, a short 15-minute walk from the hotel. All one-on-one and group classes will take place on their second floor, an open-plan, versatile space with floor-to-ceiling modern glass doors that lead to an exterior patio, offering plenty of natural light throughout the day.
Montoya founders Skye Maunsell and Jordi Veciana understand how a space can be crafted to bring people and ideas together and have used their experience in architecture and design to build a home of creative inspiration in Barcelona, and we couldn’t have found a better place to house our classes than this inspiring space.
- Will I meet my teacher or the other guests beforehand?
Yes. You’ll meet your teacher individually after registration, and the full group gathers on a video call about a month before the retreat begins. This allows the experience to feel familiar and grounded before you arrive.
- What can I expect from the creative workshops?
Our creative workshops provide a unique blend of language learning and hands-on creativity. Led by top local artists and cultural figures, these sessions are designed to inspire you while practicing Spanish in real-world contexts. Expect a mix of art, writing, and wine-tasting workshops, all set in beautiful, inspiring locations throughout Barcelona. You’ll engage in hands-on projects, learn new techniques, and have the opportunity to practice Spanish in a fun and interactive setting. The workshops will take place on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoon in different locations.
- Will I have any free time?
Yes and it’s intentional.
Some afternoons include open time to explore, rest, or follow your curiosity. One full afternoon midweek is left completely open. Suggestions are always available, but nothing is required. This is a held rhythm, not a packed itinerary.
- Where will I stay?
Your stay at The Hoxton in Poblenou will be a key part of your experience. Known for its creative ambiance and relaxed, yet stylish vibe, The Hoxton provides the perfect base for your Spanish immersion journey. You’ll be surrounded by like-minded individuals, making it easy to connect and bond with other participants. Call us biased, but few hotels capture Barcelona’s gritty yet fiercely glamorous edge quite like this one.
- Can I bring my spouse, partner, or friend if they are not learning Spanish?
We totally get that sometimes you want to share experiences with your loved ones. While it depends on the accommodation setup, we generally recommend diving into the workshop solo for the best learning experience. But hey, let’s chat about it—reach out, and we’ll figure out the best plan together! Thanks for understanding.
- Can I upgrade my room or share it if we are two people?
Absolutely! Your reservation includes a stay at The Roomie, but if you’d like to upgrade your room category for a bit more luxury, you can do so for an additional supplement. If you’d like to share the room, you can do so for an extra cost. Just let us know your preference, and we’ll handle the rest.
- What meals are provided?
Foodies, rejoice! We’ve got a delicious lineup for you:
6 breakfasts at The Hoxton
4 coffee breaks by Skye Coffee at Montoya
4 lunches at Four Corners – The Hoxton
A welcome meeting by El Xampayet at Talara Studios
Dinners at exclusive spots like Canvis Nou, Tiberi Bar, and a farewell event at Comitteé Estudio
1 Traditional lunch with vermut at Mas Palou
- I have a dietary concern
Hey there! No worries, we’ve got you covered. Just let us know your dietary needs and preferences, and we’ll make sure you’re all set with delicious options throughout the immersion. We’re here to make sure your experience is awesome and worry-free!
- How will transportation be handled?
We’ve got all your transportation needs covered. This includes private transfers to and from the airport, all transport within Barcelona, and even the trip to Mas Palou, our charming countryside masia. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

- How does payment work?
To reserve your place, a €1,500 non-refundable deposit is required. This deposit secures your seat in the retreat and is applied toward the total program fee.
Once your deposit is received, you may choose to settle the remaining balance either in full or through a flexible payment option. All payments are completed via bank transfer.
The remaining balance must be finalized no later than six weeks prior to the start of the retreat. If the balance is not received by this date, the reserved place will be released and the deposit forfeited.
- Do you offer payment plans?
Yes.
After the deposit, the remaining balance may be paid in one installment or divided into two installments, depending on what feels most supportive for you.
Final amounts may vary slightly based on room selection or optional upgrades. Our team will guide you through the process to ensure everything feels clear, calm, and aligned. All payments are completed via bank transfer and finalized six weeks before the retreat begins.
- What is your cancellation policy?
Because this is a small, carefully curated experience with limited places, our cancellation policy reflects the level of preparation, commitment, and care involved.
– The €1,500 deposit is non-refundable under all circumstances.
– For the remaining balance, refunds are issued as follows:
– 45 days or more before the retreat: 30% of the full program fee is refundable
– Between 45 and 15 days before the retreat: 15% of the full program fee is refundable
– Within 15 days of the retreat: the full program fee is non-refundable
For this reason, we strongly recommend purchasing travel or trip-interruption insurance to protect your investment in case of unforeseen circumstances.
- When can I buy my flights?
You can start booking your flights once you’ve received confirmation of your spot in the program! We’ll reach out to all confirmed participants before then with any final details, so you’ll have everything you need to plan your trip. We recommend waiting until your spot is officially secured before making any non-refundable travel arrangements.
- When should I arrive?
The program officially begins with a welcome event on Sunday evening. You are welcome to plan your arrival for any time that day. Hotel check-in starts at 9:00 AM.
The program ends after breakfast on next Saturday with departures from the hotel by checkout time. If you have never been to Barcelona (or even if you have) and want to extend your stay by booking before or after the immersion, just let us know so we can help with the logistics and give you personal recommendations.
- Do I need travel insurance or visa?
For your peace of mind and in accordance with our policy, having travel insurance is mandatory. Remember to compare policies and read the fine print to ensure you choose the best coverage for your specific needs and travel plans. Safe travels!
Please note that a travel visa may be mandatory depending on your citizenship status. We highly recommend contacting your government office or the nearest Spanish consulate to find out the specific visa requirements and application procedures. Ensuring you have the necessary documentation in place is crucial for a smooth and stress-free travel experience.
- What if I’d like to extend my stay in Barcelona before or after the immersion?
We totally get it! Barcelona is an incredible city, and there’s so much to explore! If you’d like to extend your stay before or after the Immersion, we’re happy to help. Whether you need recommendations, assistance with hotel bookings, or help with any other logistics, just let us know. We’re here to make it easy for you :)
- What’s the weather?
Spring in Barcelona is mild and pleasant. The average high temperatures range from 17°C (63°F) to 24°C (75°F), while the average low temperatures are between 10°C (50°F) and 15°C (59°F). You can expect sunny days, but also the occasional spring shower—so it’s a good idea to be prepared for both.
- What do I need to bring?
Light layers for the day (t-shirts, blouses, light sweaters) and a warmer jacket for the cooler evenings. Comfortable shoes for walking around the city. A small umbrella or light rain jacket just in case of spring showers. Toiletries. Prescription medication (very important). Whatever you use to write (laptop, tablet, pad of paper, etc.). Power cords and adapters that meet European standards (230V) for all electronic devices. And don’t forget your sunglasses—Barcelona’s spring sunshine is beautiful!
- What kind of electronic adaptors do I need?
An adapter that transforms your U.S. or U.K. (or other) plug into a “Type C” plug (also called the Europlug) has two round pins. The pins are 4 to 4.8 mm wide with centers that are spaced 19 mm apart. The plug also fits into Type E, F, J, K, or N sockets that you often find instead of the Type C socket. Bring at least one adapter for every electronic device you are traveling with (phone, tablet, PC, earphones, etc.)
